Happy St. Patrick's Day, everyone! I decided to repost this diary from last year in which I described a little bit of the holiday's history. In 2010, I wrote the diary using green font, but unfortunately, not everyone could read it because it forced me to use pictures to display the text. This year, I've decided to go with a light green background. It's my own little Irish contribution to Daily Kos, in lieu of reading the diary aloud in a fake Irish accent.
Enjoy!

Today is March 17, the day that is traditionally recognized around the world as St. Patrick's Day. You probably know about the some of the modern ways of celebrating the holiday: Parades, pub crawls, wearing green clothing, drinking, and dyeing the Chicago River. But what about the actual history of the holiday? Who was St. Patrick? What were the origins of St. Patrick's Day? What does it have to do with Irish history and culture? These were a few questions that I wanted to explore. I thought it might be fun to do a little learning and teaching about the holiday where we raise our glasses and give a toast to the luck of the Irish. Hell, I have Irish roots on my mother's side of the family, and even I didn't know most of the history behind St. Patty's Day! |
